Prograf Drug Interactions

Prograf Drug Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Prograf is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Certain Blood Pressure Medicines
Prograf may interact with certain blood pressure medicines. Combining Prograf with some blood pressure medicines, such as an ACE inhibitor, could increase your risk for kidney problems and high blood potassium levels. Taking Prograf with a calcium channel blocker may increase blood levels of both Prograf and the calcium channel blocker. Talk with your healthcare provider before taking Prograf with a medication used to treat high blood pressure.

Colchicine
Combining Prograf with colchicine can increase the amount of colchicine in your body, increasing your risk for potentially serious colchicine side effects. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medicines together, as you may need a lower colchicine dosage.

Cyclosporine
Combining cyclosporine and Prograf may increase your blood levels of both medicines, and increase your risk for kidney problems. These medications should not be taken together and should not be used within 24 hours of one another.

CYP 3A4 Inducer Medications
The liver breaks down Prograf using enzymes known as CYP 3A4 enzymes. Some medications known as CYP 3A4 inducers can increase the activity of these enzymes. Combining Prograf with one of these CYP 3A4 inducers may decrease the level of Prograf in your body, potentially making it less effective. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your Prograf dose, especially when you first start or stop taking a CYP 3A4 inducer.

CYP 3A4 Inhibitor Medications
The liver breaks down Prograf using enzymes known as CYP 3A4 enzymes. Some medications known as CYP 3A4 inhibitors can decrease the activity of these enzymes. Combining Prograf with one of these CYP 3A4 inhibitors may increase the level of Prograf in your body, potentially increasing your risk for side effects. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely if you take Prograf with a CYP 3A4 inhibitor, and adjust your dose as needed.
