Orthoclone OKT3 Side Effects

For example, contact your healthcare provider right away if you experience problems like fever, chest pain, or seizures. Most people who receive Orthoclone OKT3 will develop some type of side effect. Some of the more commonly reported reactions include diarrhea, nausea, and headaches.

An Introduction to Orthoclone OKT3 Side Effects

Just like any medicine, Orthoclone OKT®3 (muromonab-CD3) can cause side effects. As with many other immunosuppressant medicines, the side effects can be significant. Although not everyone who receives this medicine will have problems, most people will experience some type of side effect during treatment.

Common Side Effects With Orthoclone OKT3

Orthoclone OKT3 has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people given Orthoclone OKT3 were carefully documented. As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred and how often they appeared.
In these studies, the most common side effects included but were not limited to:
  • Fever -- in up to 77 percent of people
  • Infections, including bacterial, viral, and fungal infections -- up to 47 percent
  • Chills -- up to 43 percent
  • Diarrhea -- up to 37 percent
  • Nausea -- up to 32 percent
  • Headaches -- up to 28 percent
  • Increased heart rate (tachycardia) -- up to 26 percent
  • Vomiting -- up to 25 percent
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension) -- up to 25 percent
  • High blood pressure (hypertension) -- up to 19 percent
  • Shortness of breath -- up to 16 percent
  • Tremors -- up to 14 percent
  • Rash -- up to 14 percent
  • Swelling of the arms, hands, legs, ankles, feet, or other body parts -- up to 12 percent.
Other common side effects, occurring in 1 percent to 10 percent of people, included but were not limited to:
  • Weakness or loss of strength
  • Fatigue
  • Chest pain (angina)
  • Itching
  • Decreased white blood cell counts
  • Abnormally fast or deep breathing (hyperventilation)
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Abdominal (stomach) and intestinal pain (gastrointestinal pain)
  • Sweating
  • Redness of the skin
  • Tiredness and drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Breathing problems, including wheezing
  • Nervousness
  • General discomfort
  • Decreased appetite
  • A slow or abnormal heartbeat
  • Depression
  • Kidney problems
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Eye sensitivity to the light
  • Pneumonia
  • Anemia (low red blood cell count)
  • Low platelet count
  • Seizures
  • Blockage of a blood vessel, such as from blood clots.
