Myfortic Uses

How Does Myfortic Work?

Myfortic works by blocking the action of an enzyme in the body known as inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH). This enzyme is needed for T- and B-lymphocytes (cells that are part of the immune system) to multiply.
Transplant rejection occurs when the immune system, which is responsible for fighting infections, sees the transplanted organ as foreign material and attacks it. By preventing T- and B-lymphocytes from multiplying, Myfortic decreases the activity of the immune system, which decreases the chance that transplant rejection will occur.

Can Children Use It?

Myfortic is approved for use in children who are at least five years old and are stable after a kidney transplant. It has not been adequately studied in children younger than five.
Talk with your child's healthcare provider about the particular benefits and risks of using Myfortic in children. The tablets cannot be crushed, broken, or chewed, so children who take Myfortic must be able to swallow the tablet whole.

Can Older Adults Use It?

Older adults can use Myfortic. In general, older adults may have a higher risk for Myfortic side effects, such as infection, buildup of fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema), and gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. Therefore, older adults should be closely monitored to see how they respond to the medication.
