Myfortic Dosage

Most adults taking Myfortic after a kidney transplant will be prescribed a starting dosage of 720 mg twice a day. Myfortic comes in the form of a delayed-release tablet. It should be taken on an empty stomach, one hour before or two hours after food. This drug is not meant to be taken by itself; it is usually prescribed in combination with cyclosporine and a corticosteroid.

An Introduction to Your Dosage of Myfortic

The dose of Myfortic® (mycophenolate sodium) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
  • Your age
  • Your height and weight (in children)
  • Other medications you may be taking.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Myfortic Dosing Guidelines

The standard dosage for preventing transplant rejection in adults who have received a kidney transplant is Myfortic 720 mg twice a day (1440 mg daily). The standard dose in children is usually either 540 mg twice a day (1080 mg daily) or 720 mg twice a day (1440 mg daily), depending on the child's body surface area, which is normally calculated using the child's height and weight.
Myfortic is given in combination with cyclosporine (Gengraf®, Neoral®, Sandimmune®) and a corticosteroid. Your healthcare provider will recommend a dose for these medications as well.

General Information on Taking Myfortic

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with Myfortic include the following:
  • This medication comes in the form of a delayed-release tablet. It is taken by mouth twice a day.
  • Try to take your Myfortic doses at the same times each day to keep an even level of drug in your bloodstream.
  • Take this medication on an empty stomach, one hour before or two hours after food.
  • Do not crush, cut, or chew Myfortic tablets. They must be swallowed whole. This is because the tablets have a special coating so they pass through the stomach and dissolve in the intestines.
  • For this drug to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed.
  • If you are unsure about anything related to your dosing with Myfortic, please talk with your healthcare provider, nurse, or pharmacist.
