Myfortic and Breastfeeding

No research has been done to determine if Myfortic (mycophenolate sodium) passes through human breast milk. However, the medication has been shown to pass through the breast milk of rats, and it is likely that it would also pass through human breast milk. If your healthcare provider recommends Myfortic while breastfeeding, monitor your child for side effects, such as fever or other signs of infection.

More Information on Breastfeeding and Myfortic

At this time, no studies have been done to see if Myfortic passes through breast milk in humans. The medicine has been studied in rats and was shown to pass through their breast milk. The chemical properties of Myfortic make it likely that it would pass through human breast milk in some amount. However, it is unknown exactly how much (if any) would be found in breast milk, or if it would harm a nursing child.

Myfortic is an immunosuppressant drug and, like other immunosuppressants, is associated with significant side effects. Some Myfortic side effects can be serious, such as the risk for infection and certain types of cancer. Because of the potential for serious side effects in a nursing infant, it is generally recommended that women who breastfeed not take this medicine.

If your healthcare provider recommends Myfortic while breastfeeding, be sure to watch for any possible side effects in your child. Contact your child's healthcare provider if you notice any problems, including but not limited to:

  • Signs of infection, such as fever, runny nose, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Problems feeding
  • Excessive crying.
