Mycophenolate Side Effects

If your healthcare provider prescribes mycophenolate, it is important to be aware of potentially serious reactions this medication may cause. Notify your healthcare provider right away if you develop serious mycophenolate side effects, such as shortness of breath, yellowing of the skin, or difficulty breathing. Some of the more common problems reported with this drug include nausea, pain, and high blood pressure.

An Introduction to Mycophenolate Side Effects

Just like any immunosuppressant medicine, mycophenolate (CellCept®, Myfortic®) can cause side effects, some of which can be significant. Although not everyone who takes the medicine will have problems, most people will experience side effects during mycophenolate treatment.

Serious Side Effects of Mycophenolate

Some mycophenolate side effects are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:
 
  • Signs of infection, such as fever, aches and pains, sore throat, coughing, or chills
  • Sores or wounds that appear red or do not heal
  • Swollen glands in the neck, armpits, or groin
  • Any skin changes, such as discoloration, sores, or changes in the color or size of moles
  • Confusion, weakness on one side of the body, problems speaking or walking, or vision changes
  • Coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Problems breathing, shortness of breath, or a new or worse cough
  • Painful urination, blood in the urine, or urinating less often than usual or not at all
  • Signs of high blood glucose (sugar), such as:
  •  
    • Frequent urination
    • Increased thirst
    • Blurred vision
     
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Unusual tiredness, lack of energy, or dizziness
  • Stomach pain or blood in the stool (which may appear as red or black, tarry stools)
  • Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice)
  • A fast or abnormally beating heart
  • Swelling in the arms, legs, ankles, or feet
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
  •  
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Unexplained swelling, especially of the mouth, lips, or throat
    • Wheezing or difficulty breathing
    • Difficulty swallowing.
