Mycophenolate Dosage

Many forms of mycophenolate are available, including delayed-release tablets, regular tablets, capsules, and an oral liquid solution. For people who are unable to take the medication by mouth, an intravenous (IV) form is available. Your particular dosage of mycophenolate will depend on a number of factors, such as your age, how you respond to it, and your reason for taking it.

An Introduction to Dosing With Mycophenolate

The dosage of mycophenolate (CellCept®, Myfortic®) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
  • The particular mycophenolate product you are using
  • The reason you are using the medicine
  • Your age
  • Your height and weight (in children)
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may be taking.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Mycophenolate Dosage for Kidney Transplants

The standard dose of mycophenolate for preventing organ rejection after a kidney transplant depends on the particular product used. The usual dose of mycophenolate mofetil (CellCept) in adults who have received a kidney transplant is 1 gram twice a day (2 grams daily), while the usual dose of mycophenolate sodium is 720 mg twice a day (1440 mg daily).
Children who have received a kidney transplant will be given an amount based on their body surface area, which is normally calculated using the child's height and weight. The maximum recommended mycophenolate mofetil dosage in children is 2 grams per day (1 gram twice a day). The maximum recommended dose of mycophenolate sodium in children is 720 mg twice a day (1440 mg daily).
Intravenous (IV) mycophenolate mofetil can be given to people who are unable to take the medication by mouth. If given via IV, the dose will be given slowly over at least a two-hour period. Mycophenolate intravenous injection should only be used as long as oral medicines are not tolerated, and only for up to 14 days.
