Mycophenolate and Breastfeeding

It is unknown if mycophenolate passes through human breast milk. However, it has been shown to pass through the breast milk of rats, and it is expected that it would probably pass through human breast milk as well. Because mycophenolate is associated with potentially serious side effects, breastfeeding women are generally advised to avoid this medication.

Is Taking Mycophenolate While Breastfeeding Safe?

Mycophenolate (CellCept®, Myfortic®) is a prescription medication that belongs to a class of drugs called immunosuppressants. It is used in combination with other medicines to prevent rejection after a kidney, heart, or liver transplant.

At this time, it is unknown if mycophenolate passes through breast milk. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding or considering it, talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking this medication.

More Information on Breastfeeding and Mycophenolate

Mycophenolate has not been studied in breastfeeding women. Therefore, it is unknown if the drug passes through breast milk, or if it would be harmful to a nursing child. In animal studies, mycophenolate passed through the breast milk of rats. The chemical properties of the drug make it likely that it will pass through the breast milk of humans too in some amount.

Like other immunosuppressant medications, mycophenolate is associated with significant side effects, including the risk for infection, lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes), and skin cancer. Because of risks such as these, as well as the lack of information on the safety of mycophenolate during breastfeeding, it is generally recommended that women who are nursing a child not take this drug.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and mycophenolate with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
