Kidneys Home > Generic Neoral

There are generic versions of Neoral available, in a variety of forms and strengths. These generic products are available in the form of capsules and an oral solution. The FDA has determined that these generic medications are equivalent to brand-name Neoral. However, the generic versions may have different inactive ingredients, which may cause problems for some people.

Can I Buy Generic Neoral?

Neoral® (cyclosporine) is a prescription medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as immunosuppressants. It is used to prevent organ rejection after heart, kidney, or liver transplants. It may also be used to treat certain cases of psoriasis or rheumatoid arthritis.
Neoral is made by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. This medication is also available as a generic.

Available Strengths

Generic Neoral is available in the following strengths and forms:

Who Makes Generic Neoral?

Generic Neoral capsules are made by Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Sandoz, and Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Generic Neoral oral solution (liquid) is made by Apotex, Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, and Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Gengraf, a generic version of Neoral with a brand name, is made by Abbott Laboratories.

Is Generic Cyclosporine as Good as Neoral?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns each generic a rating. An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication.
All of the generic Neoral versions currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Neoral.
However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medicine. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
It is important to note that Sandimmune® (and generic versions of Sandimmune) are not interchangeable with Neoral and are not considered generic versions of Neoral. Sandimmune is the "regular" form of cyclosporine. Neoral contains a modified form of cyclosporine, which has been slightly altered from regular cyclosporine and is more easily absorbed into the bloodstream.
For this reason, Neoral and Sandimmune are not interchangeable. If you need to switch from one type or brand of cyclosporine to another, only do so under your healthcare provider's supervision. He or she may need to adjust your dosage.
