Everolimus Dosage

Everolimus Dosing for Preventing Liver Transplant Rejection

The recommended initial everolimus dose to prevent liver transplant rejection is 1 mg twice a day, taken in combination with tacrolimus (Prograf®) and a corticosteroid like prednisone. Everolimus must be started 30 days (or more) after the transplantation.
Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your initial dosage, based on your blood levels of this medication. The recommended blood level is 3 to 8 nanograms per milliliter (ng per mL). If your blood levels are outside of this range, your healthcare provider may adjust your dose every four to five days, until you have the recommended amount of everolimus in your blood.

A Note About Everolimus Dispersible Tablets

In order to help children take this medication, the manufacturer of this medication makes this product in dispersible tablets in addition to regular tablets. These tablets are mixed with water before each dose to form a suspension. The dispersible tablets are approved only for treating SEGA brain tumors, not for any other use. It is recommended to not use both regular tablets and dispersible tablets to achieve an appropriate dosage; use one or the other, but not both.

General Information on Taking Everolimus

Some considerations to keep in mind during treatment with everolimus include the following:
  • This medication comes in tablet form and dispersible tablet form. It is usually taken by mouth once or twice a day, depending on the particular product you are using. The dispersible tablets are used to make a suspension just before each dose.

  • You can take this medicine with or without food; however, always take it the same way (either always with food or always without food).

  • For the regular tablets, do not cut, chew, or crush everolimus tablets. Swallow them whole with a glass of water.

  • For the dispersible tablets, carefully follow the package instructions to prepare the suspension, either using an oral syringe or a small cup. If the suspension is not taken within 60 minutes of preparation, it must be discarded.

  • Try to take your doses at the same time each day, to keep an even level in your blood.

  • For this drug to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage or everolimus dosing in general, please talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist.
