The kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs that perform several important roles as part of the excretory system. Located below the ribs toward the middle of the back, the kidneys are designed to help control blood pressure, make red blood cells, keep bones strong, remove extra water and wastes from the blood, and convert this extra water and wastes from the blood to urine. Several conditions can affect the kidneys, preventing them from doing their job correctly.
